WordPress gives you the possibility of customizing the Permalinks to your posts by defining a custom structure via the Options > Permalinks menu in your admin area. When starting a new blog this is one of the first things I do, before publishing any posts, as it makes your links optimized for search engines right from the beginning.
As the default, WordPress defines the following link structure:
http://www.seoforwordpress.com/?p=1
By adding a custom structure, you can turn this link into something a lot more search engine friendly. The Permalink structure I often choose is as follows (see the Permalink for this post as an example as well):
http://www.seoforwordpress.com/category/postname
This can be accomplished by entering “/%category%/%postname%/” in the Custom Structure input box. There are, of course, several other tags which may be utilized in creating a custom Permalink structure, but I feel that category and postname are really all that are necessary. Often you can even eliminate the category in the Permalink as the likelihood of duplicated post names may not be very high.
