Pinging is a functionality built into Wordpress that sends a signal to special sites when there is new content on a blog.
The blog search engines are constantly checking these sites to learn where there is new content.
Often they will come to spider the new content within minutes.
This is the reason why you should set up pinging.
Normally spiders may take days to visit new content.

Google loves to get help when it comes to indexing your site.
The best way to do that is to tell them which pages are in your site and should be indexed.
For that purpose Google introduced a standardized way to provide this information: Google sitemaps (also works for other search engines).
The easiest way to generate site maps in Wordpress is to use a plugin. There are several good ones around.
We at seoforwordpress.com use Google XML Sitemaps.
